魏诗莹
蓝色日暮
Album · Mandopop · 2022
Singer-songwriter 魏诗莹 (Wishbao) knows a thing or two about conjuring an image. An award-winning illustrator and graduate of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, she ventured into music midway through a stint studying abroad in Kyoto, Japan. Her self-produced debut 蓝色日暮 (“Inner Blue”) draws on her visual arts pedigree to paint a picture of summer in seven tracks of indie pop. Wishbao wreathes her solo acoustic work and flickering drums in an irresistible halo of sonic accents: chirping cicadas, falling rain, a freshly cracked beer and ubiquitous crashing waves. When she saunters into a fuzzy realm of half-sleep on the two-minute opener “梦” (“Dream With You”), her stream of consciousness is dusted with pizzicato strings. Although the artist’s folk stylings remain front and centre throughout the album, she bolsters her sound with contributions from creative partners—from the classical guitar and accordion on the waltzing “夏夜的云” (“Love in Summer Sunset”) to the cold, distant vibe of the post-rock standout “碎情绪” (“Drowning in Deep Blue”). And the flirty bossa nova of “风和日丽” (“Summer Lover”) features arrangement and production assistance from 郭启超 (C.c), guitarist for the ebullient Shanghai indie-pop band Peach Illusion. Both laidback and contemplative, Inner Blue gently laps to a naturally set tempo, while references to dream fragments, ephemeral summers and neon lights hint at things deeper beneath the surface.
