Platform nine and three-quarters lends its aura of mystery to independent singer-songwriter 李想Evelyn’s second album. As found in the Harry Potter books and films, the platform serves as a portal from a mundane London rail station to the world of magic. For Evelyn, a Beijing-based artist and self-described slacker and serial procrastinator, it is a liminal space leading to complex, profound and occasionally surreal versions of our everyday world. She and her long-time creative collaborators tinker with elements of Dream pop and synth-pop to create a sense of wonder amidst layers of synthesisers and digital sound effects. Evelyn pulls her lyrical raw material from a wide range of uncanny sources—optical phenomena in “丁达尔” (“Tyndall”), the magic of the stage in “沉浸剧场” (“Immersive Theatre”) and apocalyptic yearning in “We Kiss”. From Hogwarts, she appropriates the Unlocking Charm as inspiration for the song “阿拉霍洞开” (“Alohomora”), in which a night of glorious revelry lies behind a locked door. That sense of fantastic adventure runs through the album, making the starting point for a journey into a realm full of musical possibility.
