Country Things, Vol. 2
Album · Country · 2020
In September 2020, Granger Smith released Country Things, Vol. 1, the first half of a new album and the follow-up to Smith's hit 2017 album When the Good Guys Win. Appropriately, Vol. 2 picks up where its predecessor left off, mixing earnest ballads with party anthems and moments of self-aware levity. Opening track "Man Made" refracts masculinity through the lens of a mother's love, declaring, "If a man made anything, it's 'cause a woman made that man." "Where I Get It From" offers a glimpse into the upbringing of a "half sinner, half small-town saint" atop a foot-stomping groove. And Smith's redneck alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr. reprises his appearance from Vol. 1 (the winking, nursery-rhyme-inspired "Country & Ya Know It"), lending an assist on the set's two closing tracks, the weekend-ready anthem "Workaholic" and the riff-heavy ode to big engines "Diesel." Country Things doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does show Smith to be one of country's more versatile, surprising acts.
