On Georgia Odette Sallybanks’ second album, the singer-songwriter constructs a vibrant sonic world through which she navigates the confusion of heartbreak and mental illness (she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder after completing the record). Sweeping strings and woodwind instruments bring a theatrical edge to her soulful, R&B-inspired pop compositions, while samples of insects and birds add a beguiling sonic layer that represents nature’s role in helping ground Odette when she feels herself spiraling (producer Damian Taylor is a regular Björk collaborator, so he is no stranger to such adventurous production). At its heart, Herald is about the end of a toxic relationship, but Odette goes deeper, investigating her mental health and taking responsibility for the way her then-undiagnosed illness may have contributed to her hurting others (“I Miss You, I’m Sorry,” “Amends”). “Trial by Fire” is a cathartic message to her mother, who also endured mental health issues, while “Why Can’t I Let The Sun Set?” essays Odette’s frustration at cycling between mental illness and moments of clarity. There is light, though, with “Mandible” signaling a desire to fall in love again: “Take my heart in your hands/Feel it beat as we dance.”
