The daydreams captured on Leche are mostly benign, though shadows of darker visions hover around the edges. On her third album, Singer/songwriter Meredith Godreau applies her waifish, pastel-soft voice to a batch of bittersweet tunes with entrancing results. Though steeped in whimsy, Godreau’s music isn’t quite weird enough to be called freak-folk — she had more in common with the folk/pop of Victoria Williams or the quieter side of Kristin Hersh. Her penchant for combining astringent and caressing textures makes tracks like “Olly Olly Oxen Free,” “Geysir Nationale” and “Over and Over” aurally intriguing. Godreau’s diary-like lyrics touch upon themes of love and desire with a demure sensuousness — “Puller Return” and “Soulgazing” are mash notes to ethereal sweethearts. The fine-etched “A Century Is All We Need” borders on the psychedelic as it hints at exalted pleasures. Godreau keeps you guessing about her next sonic move while charming you with her beguiling reveries and coy confessions.
