The second album from Olympia—aka singer-songwriter Olivia Bartley—is an unfiltered art-pop tale of heartbreak, addiction, and grief, an intimate view into the life of an artist who, on her 2016 debut Self Talk, chose to dress her deepest feelings in metaphors. Spirited opener “Star City” mimics the fidgety, twitchy energy of someone seeking endless distractions to avoid having to sit with grief, a zest shared by “Shoot to Forget” (about being with a partner who didn’t treat you well, but you’d do it all again) and “Two Hands” (which zeroes in on Olympia’s experiences with misogyny, and changing societal attitudes around it). The bass-driven “Easy Pleasure” is about taking the path of least resistance and giving into temptation; “Nervous Riders” uses gambling metaphors to represent the idea of throwing good love after bad, and how often you forgive someone and take them back when they keep letting you down; while the brooding “Won’t Say That” riffs on the idea of feeling guilt about a friend going through a difficult time: “I’m sorry, I wish it were me, I love you.”
