Katrina and the Waves
Katrina and the Waves 2
Album · Pop · 1984
Katrina and the Waves were beginning to catch on, and their success in Canada would eventually mean that U.S. labels would come calling and have them re-record their best songs for radio-consumption. As it stands, this second studio album shows hints of the direction where they’d be heading. The full-on harmonies and smooth R&B groove of “Cry for Me” is the band at its most confident and fleshed out. The Linn drum machine augments drummer Alex Cooper and is supposed to make the band sound even more modern (ah, the ‘80s!). Cooper keeps it in check and the tunes still rock with conviction. Rew throws out his mischievous side with “Maniac House” and the addition of the U.K. single “Plastic Man” and the unlikely covers of “Wild Thing” and “River Deep, Mountain High” are welcome sidebars while the blues shouter “That’s Just The Woman In Me” and “Yes Agatha” are shocking in their rawness. But the main draws are tough pop tunes such as “Red Wine And Whiskey,” bassist Victor de la Cruz’s “Do You Want Crying” and Rew’s roots rocker “The Game of Love.”
