Mexican singer-songwriter Pedro Fernández may seem like a staunch ranchera traditionalist, but he also loves the giddy rush of modern Latin pop. The former child prodigy has often chased a romantic, sumptuously orchestral sound since making his “adult” debut in late ’80s. So it’s not surprising that ¡Arránquense Muchachos! is heavy on those string-swept, retro-leaning ballads, whether swooning and sweet (“Cuando Te Vayas”) or explosive and emotional (“Como Ella”). But the party-starter lurking inside Fernández also peeks out on a handful of fiery cumbia jams (“Se Está Cocinando”).
