Hailing from the Shaigiya tribe of Sudan, Abu Obaida Hassan is considered a rebellious figure in world music. Shunning tradition by adding an extra string to his tambour and electrifying the instrument, he spent the '70s and '80s merging intricate, hypnotic Nubian rhythms with Sudanese call-and-response. He was reported dead in the early 2000s, and many believed his music was lost forever. In 2016, however, a team from Ostinato Records found him alive and well in rural Sudan. That team helped Hassan curate eight of his songs into this, the first-ever global release of Shaigiya music.
