Theory of Reggaetivity
Album · Reggae · 2016
Assassin eschews his usual dancehall backing for an exclusively reggae set, where his raspy voice and expressive lyrics add gravitas to solemn, reflective topics. Like fellow gravel-throated deejay Buju Banton, the toaster delivers his vocals with booming authority, whether over stout one-drop riddims (“Stronger,” "Feel Highrie”), retro rub-a-dub grooves (“Mix Up”), or even spry ska shuffles (“No Slave," with Chronixx). All are enhanced by striking live musicianship, and the vintage ‘80s-style arrangements of “Reggae Origin”—plus those contemplative verses—epitomize Assassin’s heartfelt embrace of Jamaica’s gift to the world.
